Canarian wrestling, often referred to as a "vernacular sport," is a proud native tradition to the Canary Islands. This iconic sport traces its roots back to the islands’ aboriginal inhabitants and remains a vibrant part of local culture today. In this full-contact sport, two wrestlers face off in a circular sand arena known as the "terrero," each aiming to bring their opponent down. The objective is to make the rival touch the ground with any part of the body except the soles of the feet, relying on strength, skill, and proper wrestling techniques—always without violence. More than just a physical contest, Canarian wrestling celebrates respect, honor, and camaraderie: even the wrestler who falls receives a salute from the victor, highlighting the sport’s enduring spirit of sportsmanship.
